Our conversation focused on the growing national security implications of ASI and the important role Congress will play in shaping policies that encourage innovation while ensuring these technologies are developed responsibly. As America’s westernmost frontier in the Indo-Pacific, the CNMI has a unique stake in these discussions. AI is increasingly becoming a strategic issue in the competition between the United States and China, and it is essential that America remains the global leader in this critical technology while putting appropriate safeguards in place. Emerging technologies also hold tremendous potential to improve disaster response, healthcare, education, and economic opportunities for our islands. The hearing focused on how small businesses around the country are beginning to adopt AI into their business practices, what allows some businesses to take advantage of AI tools versus those that never get past the experimentation phase, the complex ways AI alters the labor needs of small businesses, and what policy choices should be made to maximize the benefits of AI for small business’ competitiveness and for their workers. I questioned the witnesses on what investments the Committee on Congress should be making to prepare our workforce to take advantage of the benefits AI brings.
